Bumbling burglar in Shanghai apprehended after leaving note and phone number

A clumsy burglary attempt in Shanghai's Pudong New Area resulted in the swift apprehension of the suspect, thanks to an unusual clue left behind at the crime scene.

On May 17, police were called to an office building in Pudong after a reported break-in. Officers discovered several computers stacked on a desk, with a notebook placed prominently underneath them. Upon opening the notebook, they found a message scrawled across the page.

The message, presumably written by the thief, admitted to stealing a watch and a computer. It also included a peculiar proposition for the business owner. The note read, "Hello, boss. You need to improve your security." The suspect then claimed to only be interested in money and offered to "ransom" the stolen items back to the company, even leaving a phone number for contact.

Police reviewed security footage from the building and spotted a suspicious individual scaling the company wall and entering the premises during the early hours of May 17. This footage, combined with the phone number left at the scene, enabled them to identify a man with the surname Sang as the suspect.

By 2:30 pm that same day, railway police apprehended Sang aboard a train. All the stolen items, including the watch and computer, were recovered. Sang was then transferred to Pudong police custody at Jinhua train station.

Sang is currently under criminal detention on suspicion of theft. Authorities are conducting further investigations into the case.
