Stepped lawn in Shanghai becomes unexpected hit with office workers

A uniquely designed lawn in Shanghai has become a surprise social media sensation, attracting office workers seeking a tranquil escape during their lunch breaks.

Located at the intersection of Yunjin and Longqi roads in a sunken plaza, the lawn features a stepped design with trees providing shade. This elongated green space complements the surrounding commercial area.

The lawn's popularity stems from its ergonomic design. According to Ge Liyuan, who participated in the project, the initial design featured straight steps. However, after considering comfort, the team discovered a 110-degree angle most resembled a beach chair and offered optimal seating comfort.

Furthermore, the height and width of the steps were meticulously designed for maximum comfort and to withstand water and soil erosion. The height between steps is around 50 centimeters (20 inches), while the width of each step is approximately 105 centimeters.

"Lying on this lawn is similar to that of a beach chair, and it's very clean," said a citizen surnamed Yi, echoing the sentiments of many who frequent the spot.

During lunchtime, the lawn can see up to 20 to 30 people seeking a midday escape. In April, when the weather is most pleasant, the lawn can get so crowded that latecomers struggle to find a spot.

The lawn's newfound fame has netizens across China calling for its replication in other cities. Ge confirmed that the design is adaptable for different locations.

With its unexpected popularity, the stepped lawn offers a valuable lesson in urban design, demonstrating how thoughtful features can create a haven for relaxation in the midst of a busy city.
